History:

In 1994 when id Software released the epic video game DOOM for the PC, a few talented hackers wrote and released editors which allowed add-on levels to be created by users. Soon many other cool utility applications appeared, allowing import/export of new images, sounds, and music in/out of add-on levels. A huge flood of "WAD" file add-on levels for DOOM swarmed the Internet. In no time, the JCM Digital Imaging team completed and released 2 full add-on episode packages. Episode 1 (JCM1.WAD) provided 9 levels (a complete replacement for episode 1) while episode 2 (JCM2.WAD) included 9 additional levels PLUS new graphics, sounds, AND music by Technician!

2 tunes were written from scratch and added to the 8 existing Technician tunes which were selected to be used as game music. Due to the MIDI vs. iWAD native music format differences, some of the percussion tracks and instrument tracks had to be re-written, resulting in some unique versions of the 8 orginal Technician tracks.

12 years later, in 2006, the music from all 9 levels and intermission of episode 2 was recorded directly from game play. The sound card was set to old-school Adlib FM synthesis (OPL chipset) mono output emulation. The resulting files were digitally normalized and manipulated to remove DC offset, leading and trailing defects, then "tweaked" into pseudo-stereo using digital effects. The result is digitally remastered stereo tracks, using the vintage FM instruments.

Legacy DOOM episodes
NOTE these WADs were compiled for the v1.6 (DOS) DOOM game engine. If you have the DOS version of DOOM other than 1.6, don't let the demo run or the game will crash and you'll have to re-load. zDOOM users should have no problem with it. :-)
